Foldable smartphones are becoming more and more interesting because the manufacturers are gaining new experiences every day and therefore the devices are also getting better and more sophisticated. The form factor is also played with here and there, which also appeals to a larger target group. You don’t have to worry about the hinge either, because tests show years of robustness when you open and close it every day. The TÜV also keeps an eye on it and therefore the probability is significantly higher that you will reach for another (foldable) smartphone before a defect occurs.
The top dog in this area is clearly Samsung. However, other manufacturers also want a piece of the cake, so Vivo, for example, has now introduced the X Fold. Unfortunately, the device will initially only appear in its home country of China, and there is no information about an international market launch so far.
Modeled after the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold
For the folding mechanism, Vivo took the Galaxy Z Fold from Samsung as a model. So it folds like a book and in addition to the large inner screen there is also an outer display for use as a “normal” smartphone.
The size of the interior display is 8.03 inches (2K resolution) and 6.53 inches (OLED) on the outside. Both can handle 120Hz, with the inner screen supporting LTPO technology. Depending on the content, the refresh rate is adjusted between 1 and 120 Hz (saves battery). A special feature is the hinge technology, which creates a barely visible kink in the middle. This feature is intended to set the Vivo X Fold apart from the competition. Incidentally, the display glass is supplied by Schott. It features a nested structure, which in turn allows for a 2.3mm bend radius. Regarding the hinge, it should also be said that Vivo promises over 300,000 folds. At 80 times a day it would yield about ten years of unalloyed enjoyment.
Under the hood, the company does not take any risks and installs the current Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 1. There is also 12 GB of RAM and 256 GB of internal memory. Mandatory equipment such as WLAN 6 and Bluetooth 5.2 are also on board. Android 12 is installed on the 311 g “heavy” X Fold and there is also a USB-C port. Among other things, it can be used for charging, in which case the 4,600 mAh are fired with 66 watts. Without a cable, it’s still 50 watts. It is unlocked with a 3D ultrasonic fingerprint sensor that has been integrated into both displays. This results in greater convenience for the user, since the larger screen can be accessed directly if required and no prior unlocking of the external display is necessary.
The camera system
Vivo has opted for a quad camera for the X Fold. It starts with a main camera that does its job with 50 megapixels. This is followed by an ultra wide angle with 48 megapixels and f/2.2 aperture. Last but not least, there is also a 12-megapixel telephoto zoom camera and an 8-megapixel periscope lens. A front camera was also not forgotten, it has 16 megapixels. It is also worth mentioning the cooperation with the world-famous company ZEISS, which should ensure less glare and scattering.
Converting the price, the Vivo X Fold costs around €1,299. With an international start, however, this is likely to rise due to taxes etc.
